The 25-acre park that we see today was once full with a small lake.
It all started in 1750 when Sawai Madhavrao Peshwa shifted his focus towards the development and exquisiteness of Parvati hills after erecting the Shree Devdeveshwar Temple on Parvati hill. It was his decision to construct a lake at its foothills with the retention of about 25,000 ft2 for island at the center of the lake. Sarasbaug is the result of the creation of a beautiful garden on this island.
Sawai Madhavrao Peshwa and Mahadji Shinde of Maratha confederacy supervised its construction. In 1784, a small temple was built in Sarasbaug and the idol of Shree Siddhivinayak was installed by Sawai Madhavrao Peshwa.
